Temperature changes cause steel to move. Screws have a much better holding ability than a nail and don’t wiggle loose with the metal roof movement during expansion and contraction. Screws also have a rubber washer providing a secure seal between the screw and the metal. This lowers the risk of water entering around the loose nails and damaging the inside of your building.
